You make a great point, which is easier to trade, which can you use, which would be better under such a scenario $5000 in a bank or $5000 worth of long term storage food, and everyday trade goods? And which is easier to obtain and to convert into other needed goods or services $5000 worth of gold or $5000, worth of long term storage food, and everyday trade goods?

Definitely food and trade over coins.

Gold: it does a body good... said no cook ever.

Although coins do make good sinkers for fishing lines, and they hurt when you throw them.
