Texas State Rep. Drew Springer embraces freedom.
Even for plastic bags.
The Republican from Muenster recently filed "The Shopping Bag Freedom Act," a bill intended to block plastic-bag bans in Austin and other Texas cities.
Such bans are designed to push customers into buying reusable bags at the checkout stand or bringing some to the store.
Supporters praise the bans as a boost for the environment.
Critics deride them as unwarranted government intrusion that could increase costs for consumers.
"At a time of economic recession and with food prices at an all-time high, this hidden social tax on the poor will cause many to have to choose between necessary items such as milk and bread or having a reusable bag to carry their groceries," Springer said. "This type of government overreach must be stopped here and now.
"If a municipality can ban bags, what is to say they won't mandate how large a soda can be or how much salt one can put on their food."
Plastic bags have been a mainstay in grocery and convenience stores and restaurants for decades, edging out paper bags in popularity soon after they were introduced.

I am disgusted to be mistaken for a politically correct environmentalist and the string bag is a magnet for that kind of assumptionWalmart bags. Whenever I'm gonna be around libtards, I haul out the Walmart reusable bags -- makes 'em froth at the mouth.
We have bags from Hagerty Custom Car Insurance so the envirowenies know we burn lots of gasoline in the hot rods!!
There is another bit of data that we won’t be able to collect for a while. What happens when those so called green bags become as plentiful as klenex? I wonder if the liberals will like the look of those decorating the trees any better.
I often wonder if the liberals use their tote bags to clean up after their dogs. If not, what the heck do they use?
I like the one-hand pooper scooper, myself. ;-)
I have said for years when asked “paper or plastic?” that I didn’t care. Recently I have learned that my response meant that I was “bi-sack-ual”!
Who knew? :)snort)))))
Hasn’t it been settled that plastic bags are better to use because you can recycle plastic bags, evidenced by recycle bins at the entrance to some of the stores, as opposed to using porus fabric bags which introduce well-ducumented problems concerning the spread of bacteria? After all, cleaning fabrics takes energy, a carbon footprint problem according to liberals, and pollutes the environment with detergent.
Mea culpa. Recycling plastic bags must also take energy.
Good point.
In this article, recycling as the environmental savior of mother earth is debunked.

Thanks for that link mom.
While the article makes good points about recycling not being economical, my concern is that plastic is not biodegradable, corrections wecome. So if we continue to simply bury plastic bags then one of these days it can probably be argued that the earth is made out of plastic. (a little bit of sarcasm here)
Hmm. Yes, your point is well taken. If we were on a planet the size of the Moon, I’d be more concerned. There is probably some balance of recycling and disposal that will keep reasonable people happy. We’ve got centuries, maybe millennia before we reach that critical mass of plastic. Technology will change a lot in that time. Plastic might even naturally phase out in favor of some newer innovation. A government meddling to the degree Austin has is unnecessary and opportunistic.
The plastic bags we use at our store say that they decompose in sunlight.
