Perhaps no Republican has had a better 2013 than Rand Paul, the Kentucky senator who drew attention and praise for his talking filibuster against the C.I.A. director nominee John Brennan, then last week won the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington. Then, on Tuesday, as my colleague Ashley Parker reports, Mr. Paul gave a speech to the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, outlining his plan for immigration reform.
Mr. Paul has been fairly explicit about his potential interest in running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, so it is safe to assume that at least some of his actions are colored by his interest in positioning himself for the primaries and caucuses. But oddsmakers continue to list Mr. Paul as something of a long shot, giving him anywhere from 12-to-1 to 28-to-1 odds against winning the nomination.
Is Mr. Paul, in fact, a viable 2016 contender? Or, like his father, Ron Paul, is he someone who might expect to win the enthusiastic support of libertarian-leaning G.O.P. voters but who might otherwise fall well short of winning a plurality or majority of the Republican electorate?

Santorum didnt do very well in the GOP primaries this last time. Did he win even one state?
Good Lord. He won around 20 states. Where were you? lol. He came in second place. If not for Romney, we would have President Santorum right now.
Oops....Sorry marie, forgot about Michele Bachmann. We have many decent people to chose from but we always end up with the liberal Republicans. I think that is what you should be sick of.
There are people here who want 100% perfection and will take their ball and go home if they don’t get it.
Whether it is Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum, or Allen West - there is no republican that supports mass deportation. Apparently the new standard is that if you do not support 100% deportation you are in favor of Amnesty (This is what we are being told now - not my definition).
Then there isn’t a candidate that exist that does not support Amnesty. I am waiting to see if this standard is applied to everyone favorite candidate.
Yeah, I do have a better plan. Close the border - do not “secure” the border, close it. No one comes into America without the proper paperwork. Drop the hammer on employers who hire illegal immigrants. Do not allow them employment, or welfare, or health benefits (except emergency treatment - I’m not a monster), and especially not college tuition. They will self-deport if there are no benefits to being here. Cut off everything, regardless of when they arrived or how long they have been here, or how many children they have had here. Illegal is illegal, period.
So, basically Rand’s plan with a double scoop of East German mentality.
Got it.
You are free to return to DU now.
I think Jeb Bush and Karl “Tokyo” Rove have already put their saboteurs in the field. Looks like a Bush-Milquetoast ticket for 2016.
I'm pretty sure it died after the 1984 election. This is not a new phenomenon. No leading candidate since then has been other than a puppet. Any outsider who even begins to threaten to rise to prominence gets the Ron Paul/Sarah Palin ridicule treatment, with big money behind it.
IOW... You can’t face facts because it would mean you agree with Rand and you can’t do that because of your hate for his kook Father.
So instead of taking it like a principled person, you resort to childish crap.
Like I said, I get it... Been here a bit longer than you. I’ve seen this before.
I’m pretty sure it[voting] died after the 1984 election.
WHAT A CONCEPT!.... I remember 1988.. Reagan was so loved Howdy Doodie could have been elected..
You know... If he was a republican.. AND HE WAS ELECTED..
Somebody Howdie Doodie-LIKE....
It took George Bush Jr. to actually LOOK LIKE HOWDIE DOODIE..
When Jr. was elected I JUST KNEW somebody was laughing hard somewhere..
Principled? Rand just demonstrated that he has no principles. He is willing to kowtow to the liberals. I could care less how long you have been trolling on FR. Take your liberal crap somewhere else.
You laid out your plan, which is pretty much the same as Rand’s...
And you still insist I’m the troll...
Put down the bong and go get some sleep.
Rand’s plan is to give in to the dimocRATS. How is that the same as what I outlined. Bong? Never in my 54 years. Yes, you are a troll. You’ve been playing your troll game throughout this thread. My last comment to you is that it is time for you to go back under your bridge.
No. It isn’t. Which means you either can’t read or are a liar.
I’m betting liar.
He is not tall enough to be president. That was another negative of Dukakis.
Santorum or Allen West have a better chance. An anti-amnesty candidate could get minimum numbers like Romney at 30% in the early primaries while the amnesty candidates split their vote.
Santorum is hanging out on WND where he will realise amnesty is not popular with the base.
