These are usually fit young men. They should try nearby North Dakota for energy related jobs. Or Texas. Sometimes you have to move to where the jobs are.

However, what our government is doing right now (and that includes our Republican masters) is crazy.
The Defense industry, which could employ tens of thousands of these veterans, is getting decimated right now because of Sequestration. The military has to pay 50 cents on every dollar of cuts, despite being 18% of the budget. Entitlement spending is not touched during Sequestration.
Defense spending for private companies was down 22% last quarter (the biggest drop in decades), and that was the main driver for the overall economy going into negative territory with a minus 0.1% growth report.
One more of those and we will be officially in another Recession. I don't think we ever recovered from the last one (and statistics these days are manipulated for political reasons), however - we are probably headed into Recession territory again.
Moreover, with the DoD alone furloughing about 750,000 this week, almost half of those are veterans.

I am not certain the job losses will be 2 million, but they are going to be substantial, and they have already started.

But - Food Stamps and Temporary Assist to Need Families (Ca$h Welfare) are not touched one iota with Sequestration.
Mind you, the Republicans agreed to all of this with the 2011 Budget Control Act. Boehner bragged he got "98% of what I wanted" with that agreement that has brought us Sequestration which punishes the military, and now veterans, the most.
This is immoral.
It is time for our Republican leaders to stop crowing about how Sequestration is a "victory" and start doing something about it.
I once again feel betrayed and abused by this oppressive government.

You are thinking of the Nixon recession of 1973 to 1975, that is when I left the Army.
That was at the end of the Vietnam war and a time of fuel shortages and meat shortages, and a bad recession.

You got out in 1969, the year that Nixon took office, Carter took office in 1977, years after the Vietnam withdrawal and even the formal end of the war.
I don’t know how you think that the Vietnam vets were leaving the military in 1977 instead of 1973 and 1974.
We are miscommunication here somewhere. I suppose some Viet Nam vets were leaving the military well into the 90’s, many were still looking for good jobs into the 80’s, 90’s. I remember looking for a good job through the 70’s and well into the 80’s.
They weren't coming home from Vietnam in the 1990s or even in 1977 and 1979.
Why isn't the recession of 1973 to 1975 the most relevant to your post?
