Rand Paul Turns Sights To Comprehensive Immigration Reform (Will Embrace Amnesty in Tuesday Speech)
BuzzFeed ^ | 03-19-2013 | John Stanton

Posted on 03/18/2013 9:18:23 PM PDT by montag813

WASHINGTON — On Tuesday Sen. Rand Paul will urge conservatives to abandon their long standing opposition to a pathway to citizenship for the millions of undocumented workers in the United States, bluntly warning to not do so Republicans "will need to resign ourselves to permanent minority status," according to excerpts of a Tuesday speech obtained by BuzzFeed.

In a speech to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Legislative Summit, Paul will lay out his case for a conservative, and Republican, embrace of comprehensive reform. "The Republican Party has insisted for years that we stand for freedom and family values. I am most proud of my party when it stands for both … Republicans need to give birth to a new attitude toward immigrants, an attitude that sees immigrants as assets not liabilities," Paul will say, according to excerpts of the speech.

Like many Republicans who back a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, Paul argues Latinos should be a natural wellspring of GOP votes that the party has increasingly abandoned.

"Hispanics should be a natural and sizable part of the Republican base. That they have steadily drifted away from the GOP in each election says more about Republicans than it does Hispanics," Paul will say, arguing that "Defense of the unborn and defense of traditional marriage are Republican issues that should resonate with Latinos, but have been obscured by the misperception that Republicans are hostile to immigrants."

Although Paul has long been supportive of comprehensive reform that includes some form of a pathway to citizenship for undocumented workers, Tuesday's speech represents his most detailed comments on the topic.

"Those who work for reform must understand that a real solution must ensure that our borders are secure. It must modernize our immigration controls and databases. It must allow for as much legal immigration as our workforce requires. And it must treat those who are already here with understanding and compassion—without also unduly rewarding them for coming illegally," Paul will say.

"We should be proud that so many want to come to America, that it is still seen as the land of opportunity. Let's make it a land of legal work, not black market jobs. Let's make it a land of work not welfare. Our land should be one of assimilation, not hiding in the shadows."

Paul also will take on many of the talking points used by conservative opponents of comprehensive reform. For instance, Paul will outright dismiss claims that undocumented immigrants have become a drain on the nation's welfare system, saying "I've never met a new immigrant looking for a free lunch."

Rand should be working to secure the borders. but it seems he is too much like his father and wants open borders.

From his speech:

Those who work for reform must understand that a real solution must ensure that our borders are secure.

Polling shows a much different story. I would also point out Bush was getting 40% of Latino vote after last amnesty fight it is around 27%.

So I would disagree on the change.

Once amnesty is officially granted and approved by the courts the US is colonized and they’ll be no going back minus all out bloodshed. Most people are either in denial or too self-absorbed to care. The look on people’s faces as reality sinks in will be no consolation. The people of this country have been played and the elite conservatives I hold in more contempt than the openly corrupt gaggle of leftists and opportunists that parade their treason daily.

In truth I am not sure what that means. This country was a colony and continues to be a melting pot. Amnesty depending on what form it takes is not going to change birth rates or demographics if that is where you are headed. I believe some think it will be automatic amnesty for 11 million people. The plans I have seen makes it very difficult to become a citizen. The people that would become eligible it would take quit a bit of time. As far as the rest of your statement I am not quite sure what you mean. Once again I need to see details before I start screaming one way or the other.

I posted this the other day on a diff. thread.

When one includes the chain migration that will be a part of any reform Mexico in fact colonizes the US and Americans pay for it all. Maybe 20 to 30 million and their relatives equals half of Mexico. Even if the numbers are lower it is still an unbelievable number that would qualify quickly to forever change this country. Almost everywhere one goes in this country nothing is as it was a few decades ago. Tragic. It’s their time now. Whites and traditional and responsible Americans hide inside and cower while the octopus of corruption, criminality and machismo arrogantly grabs and steals our inheritance deriding us for our weakness and whiteness all the while. I hate to put it in these terms. Even last night at a restaurant employees were openly trashing my friend and I in Spanish for just being white. It’s everyday and everywhere one turns.

Who are the fools? Cause this won’t end well. This issue alone is enough to destroy the country despite the numerous other issues. It makes my blood boil that people can’t or won’t see this threat. I’m a naturalized citizen myself but this is something else.

Call me paranoid or a nut or ignorant and that I don’t know my history. Don’t care an ounce. This is endgame and the final nail in a coffin that’s been being built by design throughout the 20th century.

For many it’s a matter of perception. Like a court case the evidence is there to be weighed. But which side is one on the prosecution or the defense; and one’s presuppositions usually determine one’s conclusions.

Nothing personal chopperjc. I just hit post to the last comment.

Rand Paul walked on water last week with the filibuster.

But now reality sinks in.

Rand Paul has already spoken about the need for social issue changes, now the amnesty issue.

He looks a lot like Jeb, Marco and the rest of the crowd including the RNC Poobah Reince Priebus now.

Rand Paul seemed like such a great potential leader, at least for a moment. Farewell, Senator. I can’t support someone who doesn’t understand or who ignores the illegal in illegal alien.

He’s as rotten as his old man!!!

lol. A few days ago he was hero around here. That is why I don’t get on the “hero worship” train when it happens because a person does something right. I think we go overboard praising someone just because of one incident and suddenly they are a Saint. Nope they are just as they were before their lone conservative moment.

Well, the legal immigration process is a disaster. It does need comprehensive reform. It shouldn’t be easier on those that cheat.

Rand Paul is just as crappy as the rest of the GOP crowd...they all need to understand the short rope and tall tree.

"I would also point out Bush was getting 40% of Latino vote after last amnesty fight it is around 27%."

Are you saying, you think that if you can consistently just keep a 40% cut against your opponent's 60% cut (whether of new voters or new dollars) you can stay ahead and beat him?

If so, I wish I was in a weekly head-to-head card game with you!

I find it interesting that Rand would cite ‘traditional marriage’ as an argument for amnesty because I am pretty sure he is supportive of same sex marriage, which is why he recently said congress should remove the Federal tax breaks for married couples.

Rand, you cant have it both ways. You cant have small government and give illegals the vote at the same time.
Same problem with Rubio.

Get this :
For instance, Paul will outright dismiss claims that undocumented immigrants have become a drain on the nation's welfare system, saying "I've never met a new immigrant looking for a free lunch."

No??? Millions of them line up for free breakfast, lunches and food stamps every day Rand!

No, thanks, Rand, I’m not buying.

Amnesty for illegal invaders is a bright line test for me and you fail.

Rand Paul walked on water last week with the filibuster.

It seems to me that Rand doesn't give a rat's patootie about the rights of American citizens and only conducted that filibuster to generate street cred with conservatives and other patriots so he can turn around and pull this crap.

I hate Republicans more than Democrats because the Democrats will cut your throat while looking you in the eye but the Republicans stab you in the back while whispering in your ear that they are your dearest friend.

RE :”....and only conducted that filibuster to generate street cred with conservatives and other patriots so he can turn around and pull this crap. “

this is the standard GOP trick. Bark at Obama then ...the real proposal

Ryan does the same with his make believe ‘budget resolutions’ to cover for the real CR they send Obama to sign.

“The Republican Party has insisted for years that we stand for freedom and family values.”

So, maybe Rand will revive one of W's favorite sayings:

Family values don't stop at the Rio Grande."

No one should forget that the real libertarian position on borders is that anyone can come here as long as they are self-supporting (not that something like that would ever even be enforced). I expect other of Rand's positions will become clearer in the future and not many will find him a credible candidate.

Let's make it a land of legal work, not black market jobs. Let's make it a land of work not welfare. Our land should be one of assimilation, not hiding in the shadows."

And why not just get rid of all our laws and then we'd have no crime and no need for law enforcement.

Rand is just spewing the old Rove/Bush position and his sounds like an idiot.

Yeah, I do not think that is what I said. I can tell you one thing though getting a larger share (white voters) of a shrinking market = permanent minority.

George H Bush 60 percent white vote he got 400 EV’s. Romney 60% of white vote 200 EV’s.

Still want to play cards?
