The Republican base is primarily Conservative or Traditionalist or Fiscally Responsible ~ they turned out. The Rockefeller Republicans were still showing up for Bush, then when McCain came around they disappeared, and they stayed away for Romney as well.

You'd think they'd vote for their one of their own crowd but they didn't.

I think this relates to their dispute with the Reagan factions when they didn't pick Rockefeller to run after Ford. It was his turn, of course. Here was a Romney and it was 'his turn' too and they abandoned him out of pique. Same with McCain.

Time to cut that crowd loose.

Is that really what happened? Moderate Republicans didn’t turn out for Romney? The numbers show that they didn’t vote for Obama in 2012. Why would they not turn out for their ultimate candidate? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m still trying to figure it out.
