Cruz Sends Scarborough and Maddow of MSNBC Into Conniptions
The New American ^ | Mar. 17, 2013 | Thomas R. Eddlem

Texas Senator Ted Cruz's question to California Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein on the Second Amendment in a March 14 hearing forced MSNBC hosts into conniptions,

At the heart of the congressional debate are the questions: Does the Second Amendment prohibit the federal government from passing laws related to firearms, leaving the role exclusively to the states? Or does the Second Amendment grant Congress the authority to pass laws banning guns whenever it believes it appropriate?

The Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights provides that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” The term, “the right of the people,” when the framers included it in the Bill of Rights, they used it as a term of art. That same phrase, “the right of the people,” is found in the First Amendment: “the right of the people to peaceably assemble and petition their government for a redress of grievances.” It's also found in the Fourth Amendment, “the right of the people to free from unreasonable searches and seizures.” And the question I would pose to the senior Senator from California [Feinstein] is, would she deem it consistent with the Bill of Rights for Congress to engage in the same endeavor that we are contemplating doing with the Second Amendment in the context of the First or the Fourth Amendment? Namely, would she consider it constitutional for Congress to specify that the First Amendment shall apply only to the following books, and shall not apply to the books that Congress has deemed outside the protection of the First Amendment?

The Harvard Law School-educated Cruz's question sent MSNBC's Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough into an on-air meltdown, where Scarborough essentially argued that it doesn't matter what the Second Amendment says.

There’s a great new book, “Original Intent” by David Barton.

David runs an organization called “Wallbuilders”. Just search for Wallbuilders Press and you should be able to get a copy. I’ve heard David talk about this info when he spoke at my church. It’s mesmerizing to listen to him tell us how the founders felt about our country and why they worked so hard to make our Constitution so tough and resilliant.

Everybody should read it .. along with Mark Levin’s “Liberty and Tyranny”.

The modern-day champion of understanding original intent was Robert Bork, the Constitutional scholar who was nominated to SCOTUS by Reagan, had the potential to be the one of the best Supreme Court justice ever, and was rejected - trashed by the likes of Ted Kennedy. Anyone interested in a scholarly, legal, and judicial perspective on original intent should read his book, The Tempting of America. It's very enjoyable reading for the layman and opens up a world of understanding on the subject.

Another author and speaker I admired greatly on the subject of "Liberty and Tyranny" was Milton Friedman. You can find a wealth of videos of Friedman on YouTube - worth a look-see. Bork and Friedman along with Reagan were my heroes. They are now gone, and the world is poorer without them, but may their values and what they stood for live on and be carried forward in us.

If it had not been for Sarah’s endorsement, Cruz would not have been in the debates!!! Dewhurst would have won in the first primary...

Thanks so much for the book reference. I’m also a big fan of Bork.

You nailed it dennisw.

Bears repeating:

The next day Feinstein was still stewing and admitted as much. She’s been on the shelf way past her expiration date. The Senate is full of old fools and I am convinced half of them are on meds that mess up their mind. Voinovich, Pelosi, Arlen Spector being fine examples. John McCain too [I would add Durbin, Schumer, Reid and Rangel...All the other long termers too] In many House and Senate Offices the senior staff does 99% of the real work such as reading [And writing!] & analyzing a bill and telling the Rep or Senator how to vote and what to say. Also dealing with angry constituents and brushing them off because the man our Reps and Senators really wants to see is the lobbyist and preferably with a satchel of campaign fund cash. The Rep or Senators job is just to show up on Capital Hill sometimes, ask questions at hearings that will get him TV face time, to see/network with money laden lobbyists all the time, and to go out for lunch and at night to /network and do dirty deals with the other dirty denizens of DC
Yup, that's what it has evolved to from our Constitutional Republic to a good ol' boys game of money money money power power power, not giving a hoot about American Citizens whom they ARE ELECTED TO SERVE!

There’s a great new book, “Original Intent” by David Barton.

Barton is a JEWEL!

I've been influenced by him and his writings for over two decades.

He knows, and puts it out there so well, the ins and outs of our government and how very connected it was in the beginning to Christianity and the Bible. And should be to this day.

Sounds like a great book CyberAnt!

If anyone knows the "Original Intent" it is David Barton.

I totally agree, Barton is a master at telling the real meaning of our founding.
