Obama predicts cars that drive from 'coast to coast without a drop of oil'

Obama cast his proposal as not only a clean energy plan, but as one meant to create opportunities for economic growth.

Envisioning cars that can go 'coast to coast without using a drop of oil,' President Barack Obama on Friday urged Congress to authorize spending $2 billion over the next decade to expand research into electric cars and biofuels to wean automobiles off gasoline.

Obama, expanding on an initiative he addressed in his State of the Union speech last month, said the United States must shift its cars and trucks entirely off oil to avoid perpetual fluctuations in gas prices.

Citing policies that already require automakers to increase gas mileage, he said he expects that by the middle of the next decade, Americans will only have to fill up their cars half as often.

'We've set some achievable but ambitious goals,' Obama said, speaking at Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago.

'The only way to break this cycle of spiking gas prices – the only way to break that cycle for good – is to shift our cars entirely, our cars and trucks, off oil,' the president said.

Friday's speech, with its focus on energy, was designed to draw attention to what the White House says is one of Obama's top agenda items for his second term. That focus, however, has been overshadowed as the administration and Congress work on an immigration overhaul, gun legislation and deficit-reduction measures.

Lefties hate the petroleum industry, because they don’t dare nationalize it (yet.) They transfer their hate to the product, oil.

Of course, there is no better fuel or lubricant.

He does use lubricants, but not the kind you are referring to. Just ask his pals in the bath house.

Wait a minute. Didn’t Obama tell us to over-inflate our tires to get better gas milage? He’s so smart. Oh, I forgot he is using someone elses Social Security Number. NOT SO SMART!

Wait til next week maybe he will be arrested!

Pink Unicorns will be an endangered species if we have to use them as vehicle fuel instead of refined petroleum.

You are way off. Those tires utilize oil...

Don't be too sure. There are places in the world that still make use of natural rubber.

Of course, there is no better fuel or lubricant.

There is a better lubricant than the junk made from petroleum oil.

In fact, lubricants derived from petroleum oil are so limited, it is physically impossible to run a jet engine using them. You must use synthetics.

I haven't used any petroleum lubricants since 1976, and have driven over 2 million miles since then.

Also, coast to coast with no petroleum oil?

Been done, a LONG time ago.

In 1995, Raymond Carr in Saddie, a 1912 Baker Electric Roundabout, drove from Astoria, Oregon to Atlantic City, NJ. Carr charged Saddie’s 12 internal batteries with a portable generator (I suppose this could be called "cheating",using gas and oil) for the 3,304 mile trip. Saddie has pneumatic tires, bevel gear shaft driven rear end, electric powered side lamps, tail lights, and a single mounted headlamp. The interior is a lush as the outside with a vanity case, flower vases, and an electric dome light. Saddie is believed to be the last Baker Electric Roundabout in existence.

In 1996, Raymond Carr took to the road once again, in a 1909 Stanley Steam Car. Carr and his Stanley drove 5,200 miles from Anchorage, Alaska to Bar Harbor Maine. Carr was also a Goodwill Ambassador for the state of Pennsylvania, and helped raise money for the American Red Cross during this trip. This 1909 Stanley Steam Car appears like any other gasoline car of it’s time, but underneath it is powered by a steam boiler and a 2-cylinder engine. It also has the capability of going 70 mph!

Still not really without oil though, it burns kerosene.

For truely without oil, Wayne Keith is a well know in the woodgas circles as an accomplished builder, he also does academic lectures on woodgas as a sustainable renewable energy source. He successfully concluded a coast to coast run fueled completely by woodgas.

Wayne makes woodgas look easy. His units look nice too. Woodgas is a fact of life for him. He owns and operates a small saw mill and farm in Alabama and uses his waste wood to power his two trucks. Both are considered daily drivers and he has put a lot of miles on woodgas, in fact I doubt anyone in the United States has driven as many miles on wood as he has. It is a good possibility that he has more miles on wood than any of our European woodgas users.

Just search by "Wayne Keith" and "wood gas".

While Obama is completely full of crap on this one, as gasoline and diesel are obviously the way to go in normal use for the forseeable future, when the SHTF, wood gas will keep you moving.

Don’t know about the lubricant side of things, but a guy just drove 2600 miles (Georgia to California) on hydrogen.

Of course, silly me for forgetting that Obama is really “Dr. Brown!” Like a lot of Kenyan “nationals,” he doesn’t use his first name “Emmett!”
