You and I are of the same generation. I too entered military service in 1956 when Dwight Eisenhower was our CIC.
The 50’s had it’s problems, but during that decade the ‘going was good.’

Having been born in ‘da Bronx’ and being raised Irish RC, in ‘downstate/upstate NY, my Grandfather not only had a ‘problem’ with me joining while that ‘damned Republican (probably the ONLY time I heard him ‘swear) was in Office and no war going on, he also ‘refused’ his Govt Retirement (40 some years as US Mail Carrier) letter signed by IKE.
Could never really ‘figure’ it out, I was Conservative but toleratd JFK and LBJ couldn’t stand JEC and despised (at least politically) Clinton and BO so guess I would have the same reaction as he....
The funny thing about him not liking IKE, if the situation was more favorable, Ike could just as soon run as a “D”.
