As I understand it he has no heirs. He never married, had no children and was the last of the Mohicans in his family.

You certainly could be correct but I think that's rare.Every state has laws that apply if one dies "intestate",without a valid will.These laws go down a list of types of relationship...spouse,parent,child,sibling,etc.How many people don't have a niece/nephew...great niece/nephew...second cousin,etc somewhere? And if I'm wrong I think that most states' laws in such a situation say that when *no* relative can be found the $$$ goes to the state.In that case you can be sure that the state will fight this until the cows come home given the potential $$$ involved.
