WASHINGTONDespite signs of stepped-up White House involvement, a bipartisan compromise over expanded background checks for gun buyers remained elusive Tuesday as a Senate committee prepared for votes this week on curbing firearms. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has been the lead Republican negotiating with Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and other Democrats over a compromise background-check measure. They've been stuck over Democrats' insistence that records be kept on sales between private individuals.
Coburn spoke at the White House last week with Vice President Joe Biden on guns and other issues, and received a phone call Monday from President Barack Obama in which they discussed "everything," the senator said. He declined to provide details.
"I think we're very close," Coburn said Tuesday in a brief interview. "I think we'll eventually get there."

...and consider taking the state's 166,000 registered assault weapons from their owners.
So much for all those reassurances that registration will not lead to confiscation.
Why is the SERIAL NUMBER and MODEL NUMBER needed for a background check? It seems to me that you should ONLY check the person and be done with it. Nothing is gained with serial and model numbers, UNLESS someone is trying to build up a database for later confiscation.(which our government denies they want to do)
No. Not just no but hell no. The fascists don't need to know, have no authority to demand to know. So Foxtrot-Oscar 'rats.
The GOPe is negotiating your freedoms away
So much for all those reassurances that registration will not lead to confiscation.
You're a smart guy - you never for one minute believed registration would not lead to confiscation, did you? Of course not. Anyone and everyone knows the only reason they want that information is so they can use it. What possible use is that kind of information, really? Right. Only if they plan on taking them away at some point. (or trying to anyway)
Why is the SERIAL NUMBER and MODEL NUMBER needed for a background check? It seems to me that you should ONLY check the person and be done with it.
You're right. A background check is allegedly to determine if the person can legally own a firearm, period. What they intend to purchase is nobody's {expletive} business but their own.
Nothing is gained with serial and model numbers, UNLESS someone is trying to build up a database for later confiscation.(which our government denies they want to do)
I flat out call the government, and every single gun-control proponent a lying POS. All of you would-be gun-grabbers are lying and you know it. You can try to justify it to yourselves as being for the greater good, that the ends justifies the means, etc. etc. BS. You're in good company though - lots of dictators, fascists, and flat out evil lunatics have used the same self-serving justifications throughout history to perpetrate horrible acts on humanity. Sleep well on that.
Even if I was dictator (like Obama), there is not a single additional background check or firearms restriction that I would pass, recommend, or approve - neither for public safety nor for whatever virtue lies in “compromise” with fascism. My choice would be to repeal ineffective firearms restrictions and enforce laws regarding the use of firearms in crime and other laws on violent crime.
1. Let’s repeal all restrictions on silencers. Silencers make recreational shooting and hunting more pleasant for participants and for others.
2. Let’s repeal all restrictions on short barreled rifles and shotguns. Pistols are legal, including for concealed carry, and short barreled long guns are no more concealable.
When we take those steps and America doesn’t turn into the Wild West, we can move on and repeal more stupid federal gun laws. As for the local gun laws in DC, Chicago, NY, CA, and Massachusetts, which have the purpose of infringing on our individual right to keep and bear arms, they should all be overturned by the Supreme Court - immediately.
Come on GeronL,
You have to know there isn’t a spittle of difference between the”parties”???
Both b making lots of money. So they don’t want to rock any gravey boat.
Here is a compromise Coburn can propose to Schumer.”You want to keep records of all background checks. I propose you can keep records of all background checks that were denied.”
And, don’t forget that they should also keep records on all the sales done by the bad guys who couldn’t care less about any stinkin’ laws on the books. Oh, wait. The baddies “probably” won’t be calling to do background checks. I guess that’s why they’re criminals. Because they don’t obey the law anyway. Silly us for thinking new laws will do any good. Kind of like the “new improved” straw purchase law under discussion. How do we make an offense more serious? Well how about instead of being bad, let’s say it’s REALLY REALLY bad. Yup. That should put and end to that. Idiots!
Background checks of private sales without gun registration will be universally ignored. Raise your hand if you have any intention of ever going to an FFL dealer and doing a background check to sell a gun to your buddy up the way. Thats what I thought. Thats the reason they have left private sales alone all this time.
If they set up a system where people could go online and determine if someone was a prohibited possessor, anonymously, many would do it.
Of course, the nanny state types would not allow that system, because it removes control from them.
“Of course, the nanny state types would not allow that system, because it removes control from them.”
Yes and we all know the people cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
It had better be slipperier than a damned eel's p3¢k3r.
Then they will find a reason temporarily "deny" all checks. Once in the record it will never disappear.
The implied threat, of course, is that if your buddy is ever caught with an unregistered weapon he and you go to jail. C.W. II is coming if they keep pushing.
Background checks that are denied would have no record of gun ownership.
Here’s a solution to the background check / gun registration issue. Fill out the background check form, pay an appropriate fee to have the check performed, be issued a card, much like concealed carry permit cards are issued today. After you get your card, you go to purchase a gun, the FFL does a simple computer check to make sure your card has not been pulled, and if it is still valid, you buy your gun and take it home. No record forwarded to the government or anyone else. I can live with that. After you get your card you dont have to go thru any more background checks except the simple verifcation that your card is still valid.
I was around when the 1968 GCA was debated. At the time it was widely recognized that records from a background check could morph into a National gun registration scheme, so, the following was added as an relief valve to prevent that:
"While current law mandates that a background check be performed if the seller has a federal firearms license, private parties living in the same state are not required to perform such checks under federal law. State laws however can prohibit such sales."
Beware of that last - it's a hooker.
Immediately after the Act went into effect, the liberals started the "loophole" B/S and have been pushing for it ever since. It is their wet dream to "expand" it.
