For the fourth month in a row the FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, processed more than 2 million background checks in February and broke a handful of records.
These statistics represent the number of background checks performed before a patron can actually buy a gun, but it doesnt actually translate into final sales or number of guns sold. However, it does give the public an estimate.
In February the FBI reported 2,309,393 background checks making it the third biggest month for checks since NICS was implemented in 1998, and February 2013 also holds three of the biggest weeks for checks ever.
While the 2.3 million checks is a 7 percent decrease from last month, its about 32 percent increase from February 2012.

Or it could be something else entirely.
What are your thoughts?
Just wait for the Feds to stop doing background checks due to the sequester. Just predicting.
That's another reason (aka "national Emergency") they want the "universal" background check. Find some reason to shut down the checks and there can't be any more legal gun sales.
..but 11 million illegals too big to deal with.....
I say, I say, dere's a whole lotta gun buyin' goin' on out dere!
They'll be following Maryland's State Police lead.
Checks that are supposed to take 7 days are now taking 45+ days.
Anything to throw sand in the gears.
2 million people are idiots!
The other 350 million plus, have already almost exhausted ammo and reloading supplies.
Have I ever told you the details on how to distill snake venom into a lethal fingernail polish?
No?
Get a background check, and ask me for details.
LOL!
What do they think they are accomplishing other than getting us all angrier and angrier? We (the 100+ million Americans who own guns) already have somewhere north of 400 million guns.
Actually, they just might. That would stop the gun and accessary sales, give Obama a little flesh and allow him to blame it on the GOP.
“..it doesn’t actually translate into guns sold...” ???
Whyinthehell would you fill out a 4473 if not to buy a gun?
I’ve only bought one at a time but will get more if you can get several on one form.
Come to think of it, the Fast and Furious folks must have gotten several hundred on one background check.
...(February) a 7% decrease from last month..
Yeah. 10% fewer days in Feb.
There’s no way I would consider buying through regular channels (with B/G check) now. Private sales with no check are still allowed in this state (unless that damn bill passes) - but I’m pretty much stocked up and out of cash anyway. I’m guessing that not as much information was retained from application forms in previous years or at least not as systematically.
Thanks EXCH54FE. Imagine my relief when...

And background checks have become such a hassle. When I bought a firearm five years ago, it took the gun dealer 15 minutes to get some FBI paper shuffler on the phone to verify that I wasn’t a felon, and I could walk out with my heat. Today it takes hours, sometimes days. The gun dealer says it’s because of the backlog of so many panicky first-time buyers, but I wonder....
Saturday I bought an old Chi Com Type 53. The NICS check took over half an hour. (I passed.) I bought 1000 rounds of Iranian (aka “Persian”) 8mm Mauser, 10 rounds of 12 gauge buck, some targets and other stuff while I was waiting. If the check had taken any longer I’d have gone broke!
