My wife and I couldn't decide of our oldest son should have toy guns, UNTIL he started making his toast into guns and shooting us with it.
Boys like guns, they like to play cowboys and Indians. The play war and Cops and Robbers. They also like to play Zombie Apocalypse. I refuse to put up with zero tolerance and made them remove the policy from our private parochial school.
Good. In child development theory, it is well known, yet never spoken of, that a boy’s normal development depends on his ability to competently handle a weapon.
Based on behavior of boys and men all the years since I learned that, and it is a theory, it is clear that there is merit.
Taking away guns and weapons and placing a negative conotation on them, in my opinion, is dangerously emasculating, and perhaps that’s the goal at least subconsciously.
One of the nicest guys I know is a former champion boxer and a marksman shooter. Guys don’t mess with him, but he has a peaceful demeanor.
Also, Carl Jung’s theory of archetypes weighs in on this. Efficient handling of weaponry potrays a rite of passage into maturity for boys to men in stories (and movies).
That’s just about development. There’s much to say.
But they are FOOING around with masculinity and someone needs to make it stop. Moms are so unaware and unconcerned it’s maddening. THey do not know what they are perpetuating.
