Cardinal Keith O’Brien admits sexual misconduct

CARDINAL Keith O’Brien dramatically broke his silence last night to admit sexual misconduct during his career with the Roman Catholic Church.

The former archbishop and leader of the Church in Scotland said there had been times when his behaviour had “fallen below the standards expected” of a priest, archbishop and cardinal.

His admission came a week to the day after allegations by three serving priests and one retired priest that Cardinal O’Brien had behaved inappropriately towards them during the 1980s were first made public.

In a brief but frank statement, the former Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh apologised and asked forgiveness from those he had “offended”.

He added that he would play no further part in the public life of the Catholic Church in Scotland.

The statement also revealed that Cardinal O’Brien has left the country.

The original report of the allegations against the cardinal, who was Britain’s most senior Catholic cleric, quoted one of the complainants, a former seminarian at St Andrew’s College, Drygrange, where Cardinal O’Brien served as spiritual director between 1978 and 1980.

The former priest, who is now married, said he resigned from the priesthood when Cardinal O’Brien was appointed a bishop. He said in his statement: “I knew then he would always have power over me. It was assumed I left the priesthood to get married. I did not. I left to preserve my integrity.”

Yesterday, the former priest, who has not been named, spoke of his belief that the Church would “crush” him if they could for breaking his silence.

“There have been two sensations for me this week,” he said. “One is feeling the hot breath of the media on the back of my neck and the other is sensing the cold disapproval of the Church hierarchy for daring to break ranks.”

the “Catholic Church” will be stripped of all reminaing assets, as it will be officially banned.
Reminder: the financial assets were already almost entirely transferred during the last 50 years ...
So what will now be transferred is essentially real estate, art, etc.

Good grief. For the equivalent of an act of adultery? Meanwhile our former president is the model of respectability. In any case, it is good to remember that O’Brien is part of the anti-Roman wing of the Catholic Church, having oppose the election of Ratzinger and support Montini, one of the most “progressive” Cardinals.

This is “The Filth” that the Holy Father spoke of.

Yes, indeed, and long overdue. To think that these predators have been allowed spread their filth while protecting others all these years is evidence that the Church cannot be trusted to rid itself of this evil.

The move came a day after it was reported that three priests and a former priest had complained about him to the Vatican over alleged “inappropriate” behaviour stretching back 30 years.

A homosexual - surprise, surprise.

The filth they have spread is more staining than sexual misconduct. Meanwhile homosexuals strut into the Polish parliament pretending to be champions of liberty. What they show is how little respect they have for western tradition.

Why is this not on the ‘Homosexual Agenda’ page?

Well, there goes the First Amendment, right down the toilet. What do you propose to do with Catholics who won't go along with their religion being suppressed and destroyed, with their churches and schools being taken over by the government, etc.? Shoot them? "Re-education" camps? Have you thought this through? Repression -- and that's exactly what you seem to be suggesting -- is always a lot easier to start than it is to finish.

Meanwhile, your government promotes sodomy at every level, and, through its school system, tolerates molesters at ten times the rate they were tolerated by the church. Yet you want to use the government to kill the church?

Sounds like you jumped off the deep end....this is not a First Amendment issue. Neither is it a Government vs. the Church issue.

This is about the Church ridding itself of those who use the authority of their vestments to prey on others.

This is about the Church identifying criminals (the perverts as well as their protectors) so they can be brought to justice for their crimes.
