Romney would have won if he would have gone after Obama as being a failure and pointed out all he failures. There are so many.
Anyone could have won by relentlessly exposing Obama! Newt and Herman would have done it!
I agree with your statement completely. Romney should have pounded Obama on the things he has said and done, or lack thereof. Since Obama has such a big ego, I would have started there - go after his shortcomings and make him feel insignificant. We saw that in the first debate and Romney made Obama look like an idiot (which is not hard to do cause the guy is an idiot). If he had kept that momentum going, he probably would have won. McCain made the exact same mistake.
