Americans are a lot better at belt-tightening than the people they send to Washington.
As Americans income fell by 3.6 percent in January, President Obama and Congressional leaders were warning of the dire consequences of sequester, the budgetary booby trap that forces cuts of as little as a third of that from the mammoth federal spending plan. Working stiffs sucked it up and absorbed the biggest monthly drop in income in 20 years, while the elected officials insisted that the federal budget had no fat to trim.
Financial planning experts say if Americans can take such a big bite out of their paychecks, Washington should be able to weather a similar cut, percentage-wise.

The number of people who were reduced from 40 or even 35 hours a week to 29 is probably to blame for this one month income drop.
Americans’ incomes were indeed cut. Income growth wasn’t slowed, it was a real cut. An reduction in income.
Government isn’t cutting, they’re not even able to slow the growth without squalling like muslims sprayed with pig blood. No reduction at all.
And the press...many of them hate America as much as 0bama does.
2% of that cut came from the hidden payroll tax Obama slipped through without notice.
Also is there really a cut in this sequestration or just a cut in what they intended to spend.
All over the internet government workers are whining about their pay cuts and furloughs. And right here on Free Republic somebody posted a cool gif of Bruce Willis from the original Die Hard yelling “welcome to the party, pal!”
Cry us a river, ya whiners. We’ve been there.
Trouble is that Washington thinks it should make up for the drop.
That "hidden payroll tax" was for Social Security -- a program already going bust before its funding was cut even further. In general, I would expect conservatives to support that "hidden payroll tax". The complaining should have happened when it was cut in the first place.

Just another way to suck up more money from the public coffers that they have no intention of repaying if they have their way.
Over the last 2 years my income has dropped significantly. My hours are cut and I’m trying to find another job but its unbelievably tough.
I never had trouble finding work before; whether it was part time or full time. I can’t even find part time work to supplement my formally decent paycheck.
I used to be hard on people who complained about not finding work. Now I’m one of them.
Actually I support the s/s reverting to previous levels. My problem however is that our politicians are very generous with our so called social security that wouldn’t even buy dog food for dinner if you really had to live on it.
Washington screws up everything. Have been watching House of Cards and of course this is fiction but how far from the truth can it really be?
That is pretty much over with. The real whining is about pension clawbacks attempts.

And as private sector folks fade away under unemployment and poverty, their overlords will go on forever wealthy with recirculating, magical debt. The mighty taxpayers: big revenues in, little droppings of revenues out. Also industrious in enforcing regulations, political correctness and propaganda in government schools—not like we lazy folks, who polluted the environment with our useless machines and tools. See how that works?
The truth is that the people of the true private sector are hardening and adapting. Their opposition in government, government-linked services, academia and NGOs, supported by fat chunks of debt, are more likely to riot in the near future, because at some point in time, they will be laid off in very large numbers. There’s no magic money tree. A large manufacturing base is required for revenues in a prosperous country.
About time somebody started to make an issue of this....
