A Truly Depressing Visit to JCPenney (No Discounts, No Coupons, No Business)
Slate ^ | March 1, 2013 | Matthew Yglesias

JCPenney, the storied if unglamorous retailer, is in trouble. Big trouble. Fourth-quarter earnings results came out on Wednesday and they were terrible. The bad news starts with a quarterly loss of $427 million, but it doesn’t end there. Comparable store sales—meaning stores that were open this past quarter and also open in the same quarter of the previous year—fell by a mind-boggling 32 percent. Henry Blodget says it may have been the worst quarter posted by any retailer ever.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. JCPenney made a big splash in the retail world by hiring Ron Johnson, mastermind of Apple’s retail operations, as CEO. He immediately set about to reorganize the stores, and imported Apple concepts, most notably a “no discounting” policy geared around convincing customers that the everyday price is a great price. The results seemed to speak for themselves, but I was curious. After all, I’ve never given the “new” JCPenney a try. Perhaps Johnson is a visionary genius who’s reinvented the department store, and the world just isn’t ready for him. Perhaps he’s the victim of bad luck. Perhaps shareholders just need to hold on and have faith.

JCPenney has been in decline as long as I can remember.

Back around 1966, I ordered an FN model 1949 in 7mm Mauser by mail order from their catalog. For many years they carried a line of hardware including Penncraft tools which were of good quality and had the same lifetime warranty as Sears Craftsman.

They dropped firearms, then dropped hardware, they dropped about everything except clothes.

I can remember when just about any town of any size had a JCPenney even if it was a small store.

I remember in his book, Sam Walton mentioned working for JCPenney and learning the trade there. He also me Penney in person.

I had not visited one of their stores in quite a few years and after they started a really strong push for the Gay agenda, I decided to never shop there again.

Before long I will not be able to shop there even if I wanted to.

AND their mother’s and father’s day ads highlighted homosexual parents. That was the final straw for me. Have not darkened the door of a Penney’s since those ads.

“I wouldn’t go back for free stuff, let them go bankrupt”

I agree. JCP was the first credit card my husband and I got after we married in 1985 and we always paid on time (not paid the balance every month, but paid every month on time). However, in 2008, after I was laid off from work and went back to school, we received a notice from GE Capital (JCP card bank) that they were raising our interest rate. We could opt out of the interest rise, but they would then cut off our credit. I opted out, GE/JCP cut off our credit after 23 years, and I have not stepped foot in a JCP store since. Never will again. I hope every store closes.

Oh my goodness, I didn’t see those! And I’m glad I didn’t. I probably would have lost my lunch.
