I am convinced the New Coke debacle was cover for the switch from sugar to HFCS in Coke.

I read some time ago that a reputable consumer research company tested that 85% of people could tell a difference between Mexican Coke with sugar and Classic Coke with HFCS, and 80% of them preferred Mexican Coke.

Of course, even Mexican Coke now can contain up to 60% HFCS, so it's harder to tell now.
