I wonder how parents can be so weak that they permit a little boy, still in diapers (when they allowed him to make playing make-believe a permanent choice), to make such a major decision. Having had children who decided to be a dog (or worse - a democrat!), I know that it’s quite easy to lead kids to better choices and let them feel like it is their decision. It may have been the easiest option at the moment when they let it happen, but good parenting is a whole lot less work in the long run than allowing a toddler to make adult decisions, especial bad adult decisions.
I wonder if these parents have bought into the gender is just a social construct idea like that crazy couple in Sweden who are raising their child as an *it* giving the child a gender neutral name, dressing the child in a way that makes it difficult to tell its sex, refusing to tell anyone what the sex is and using the neuter Swedish term rather than the word him or her. These loons are doing it to make the child gender neutral but there may be another variation of this in which parents may encourage a child to choose which sex they want to dress like etc. and then they begin to reenforce the gender that the parents believe that the child wants. I think there is definately some guiding going on no matter how subtle this might be—”Oh Johnny, you wore your jeans yesterday, wouldn’t you like to try this pink dress today?”
