And there it is: The ultimate panic-inducing cherry on top of the sequester-scaremongering sundae. Apart from the devastating, eviscerating, meat-cleaving threats of flight delays, park closures, and whooping cough, the existential threat that is the dreaded sequesteration is going to make it much more difficult for the Department of Homeland Security to perform one of its primary functions: Thwarting terrorism. Via WaPo:
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Monday that her agency would be forced to furlough 5,000 border control agents under mandatory spending cuts, likely allowing more illegal immigrants into the country and potentially compromising national security.
Napolitano said the cuts, known as the sequester, would disrupt the Department of Homeland Securitys ability to conduct customs inspections at ports, leading to increased waiting times for travelers and cargo shipments. Disaster relief funding would be reduced by $1 billion, she added, meaning relief for victims of natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy and tornados in Joplin, Mo., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., could be cut.
Asked if the cuts would make the country more susceptible to acts of terrorism, Napolitano said: Its always a threat. We do what we can to minimize the risk, but the sequester makes it awfully, awfully tough.
The Food Stamp Prezidint would never let that happen. I see your starving children and raise you a Spotted Owl and 10 Delta Smelt.
What was this about banning guns again when the border is more or less wide open? Napolitano just confirmed why we need our guns more than ever.
But you're not securing the border with the funds you already have. So . . .
"What difference does it make?"
The sequester is hitting the private sector as well. The store that sells ink pens has closed and I may be unable to write a check to the IRS ;-)
obambo, Butch, Uncle Joe, John Effin Kerry....does anybody think these clowns realize we’re all laughing at them?
Yes, he did. That was exactly what I was thinking. Here's a state that wants to help secure the border, and the federal government says "No way, that's OUR turf." Now the federal government says it has no intention of enforcing the law anyway, both by executive order, and by standing down at the border.
It makes an impression on me that the federal government is worse than worthless.
They can take their mirrors and use it to observe the smoke coming from their collective behinds.
I don’t care what they do anymore. I’m just waiting for them to cross that invisible line.
I’ll not be goaded into crossing it, but I’m darn sure waiting for them to do it. They won’t be able to help themselves - they are like children with a secret..
A spotted owl and 10 delta smelt? LOL! I won’t call yet, but I’m laying down a sand lizard ‘ 3 prairie chickens, and one frack tank..
...but not tougher to pay welfare queens? Funny what the priorities are of the people that set up the automatic cuts.
Napolitano is an insult to women, to people who know how to walk and chew gum simultaneously and to anyone with the brain stem of a moth!
If this was true, the dems would want a sequester every day.
Worse yet Obama sues AZ for defending themselves against illegal invasion partially disarms the state by judge order, then he says ‘if you refuse to help me raise taxes AGAIN I will let the illegals in jail loose and open the borders too, and blame it all on the Republicans in congress’
Call him out GOP. Fight on this one.
I'll give to Caesar what he asks, this year. Caesar should be made to feel comfortable, made to feel powerful..until the ENTIRE body of patriots have run out of ink.
How much of the DHS’s share of the sequestration would be met by cancelling those orders for hollow point ammunition that they have no legitimate use for? (If it’s really for training, let them shoot cheaper rounds on the range.)
Everybody who has ever run a business knows what it's like to have to cut costs.
Indeed, outside of Defense, they're having to cut costs by, what, 3%? After having gotten a 6-7% budget increase from the previous year? And we're not talking short notice -- they've known this was coming since, when, July, 2011?
So, given that kind of notice and the relatively niggling amount involved what the hell kind of managers are they that they can't find enough efficiencies, redundancy and waste to perform the same functions within a slightly smaller cost frame?
Truth be told, the administration should be ashamed for their publicly proclaimed incompetence! And the media reveals their own ignorance by not calling them on it.
There is not a manager at any level in the private sector who hasn't had to deal with a problem of this nature and similar scope. Most have handled it.
And nobody in the federal government can...???
You have that right Smoothsailing. Deceitful drama queens at that....
Someday they’ll play the same kind of tax increase blackmail with obamacare, threatening the public with the consequences of service cuts, particularly to seniors and children.
You’re being a little rough on lying sacks of shit.
