God bless his memory and his work. Rest in the Lord, Sir.
His beard, however, remains on life support.
RIP C. Everett, you were a Great Human!
Was he wearing a condom?
Koop announced that cigarette packs had to carry a warning statement (1964). I was still a kid but I recognized the intrusion of government into my life. I started smoking that very day as my own act of defiance.
Me too - very young, but recognized it!
Koop wasnt surgeon general until 1981 under Reagan.
But he made up for it, in part, in 1979 by conjoining a half-dozen Democrats into a sort of ‘human centipede.” He experimented with lab rats as well and the surgery was conducted under rigorous scientific standards in the basement of the WH. They were volunteers (more-or-less) but you don’t hear much about it. It was controversial.
They were separated ten years later and asked to be called “Dianne Feinstein.” Yes, there are actually six of them.
That was Trey and Matt, not Koop.
That was William H. Stewart Surgeon General under LBJ, NOT C. Everett Koop, SG under Reagan. Koop was also very strongly anti-Smoking but not the first to put warnings on cigarettes.
Curiously, the article doesn’t mention how he died. Of course, in the end it’s all the same: Killed by death.
Of course he wasn’t always popular with hardcore social conservatives for advocating condom use and proper education to curb the AIDS epidemic, although he said he didn’t think his personal views should override his professional ones.
Also his later funding of drkoop.com which became one of the very first general medical advice websites, although it soon got pulled because of being used as advertising for pharmaceutical companies.
Before Koop, most people didn’t know the Surgeon General’s office even existed although it went back to the late 19th century. Of course it gained somewhat more notoriety with Joceyln Elders went and said that schools should teach children how to masturbate, but that’s neither here nor there.
“Curiously, the article doesnt mention how he died. Of course, in the end its all the same: Killed by death.”
Come on man, the guy was 96. At that age you can just go to sleep one night and not wake up again.
Killed by sleep?
The good die young.
:)
:)
Maybe we all should start smoking a pipe.
You two DO realize that if the govt finds out how many people die in their beds each year they will ban them.
Just sayin, loose lips and all that.
Hmmm, he must have misplaced his “Life Alert”.
