Sounds like workable hypothesis. Unfortunately, it's not falsifiable.
This what it must have been like watching the Soviet-Nazi War, or Iran-Iraq, regretting only that they could not both lose. Still it must suck to be a peace-loving, fairminded person in Syria, caught between the snouts of two raging hyenias.
