It seems more than a coincidence the acceleration of decline in the 1960s, with the Soviet Union's establishment (in the late '50s/early '60s) of the doctrine of the use of subversion vs. more active measures against the West. I suspect whatever seeds they may have planted then are now paying off (too late for them).

Never before in my life have I EVER had trouble finding a job. Longest unemployment was 5 months.
