The problem is that there is not, repeat
not sufficient support in this country to prohibit all abortions including the "grey areas".
There is sufficient support to prohibit abortions which are not "grey".
Here on FR we have a lot of pro-lifers who are unwilling to take an incremental approach. For them it's all or nothing, and nothing is what they have gotten.

Voltaire said, “Le miuex est le’enemie du bien”, meaning, “The perfect is the enemy of the good.” In theory, all pro-lifers are against all or almost all abortions. However, a large and growing number of us will support legislation that saves even a few lives. As long as we make it clear we are aiming to save every life we can, it isn't wrong to back the incremental approach. For example, the Catholic bishops supported the ban on paretial-birth abortions; they didn't say, “If it won't save every baby, to hell with it.”
