Well, the cuddly old Germans have to take much of the blame for that as well. Rampant militarisation by King Willy, the invasion of Belgium, war crimes against the French and Belgian people, even allied prisoners......

The French regime was the kingpin in the interlocking treaties prior to WWI. They could have stopped the war very early on ~ like from DAY 1.

In that sense France is responsible for all the carnage in Europe in the 20th century, much as it was responsible for most of the carnage in Europe in the 19th century!
