The more you think of it the funnier it is.
They have to *kill* their followers, if they stray, or they religion would collapse. They admit it. Hell of a religion you got there. Literally.
It’s no different from the way communists need to kill anyone who tries to leave their country’s boundaries.
Do they want people who don’t think? Of what use are such?
Do they want people who think? They will end up pondering, “If our way is so great, why is the penalty so drastic for those who stray?”
I guess the Inquisition, and most of English history, and the Salem witch trials, show the same mindset, but we’ve evolved.
