Karl Rove has been working overtime trying to reassure the conservative wing of the GOP that some of his best friends are tea partyers.
On Bill OReillys Fox News show last week, Rove played up his credentials with the right by asserting that he headed Ronald Reagans 1980 presidential campaign in Texas.
As it turns out, not so much.
In fact, as we reported in some detail in the book Bushs Brain, Rove worked for George H.W. Bush against Reagan in the states 1980 primary.
And others directly involved in the Reagan effort in the Lone Star State say Rove was not in charge.

I cannot believe after the losing spree we have been through, our party is left with Karl Rove as a representative.
What a farce.
I will continue to fight....urge all of you to go after the local, state and national GOP. No more RINOS NO MORE BUSH family!!!!
I think that Rove had some involvement in fundraising via mailing. I believe Rove had a company that did that at the time.
because wayne slater is a crock roach, I don’t read him at all...you on the other hand have the nail hit. I read about this days ago and Rove spent a lot of time raising money and other things in TX. I’m no fan of his (rove), he was a one hit (GWB) wonder that has milked 15 minutes of fame to 4+ years, after his success left the stage.
No one with the Reagan campaign in Texas remembers Rove. Just like no one remembers Obama at Columbia except for his homo roommate and fake girlfriend.
Too many conservatives sat on their butts last winter and allowed Romney get the nomination over Newt and Rick. We can fault the RINOS for many problems within the GOP but some of that blame lies with conservatives as well. We whine about the establishment but when it comes time to take them on there’s not enough people on our side to make a difference, and mainly it’s because of inaction.
First, The Great Gazoo, Karl Rove, has been exposed as a self-aggrandizing liar.
Second, some intrepid soul in the Vichy Media actually took the time to delve deep into Rove's resume but Ubama's remains safely under lock and key in a mayonnaise jar on Funk & Wagnall's front porch.
I need to stop reading novels. Nothing matches real life for weirdness and entertainment.
Karl Rowe is obsolete.
Ha! Turns out Tokyo Rove is a bigger fraud than he himself claimed Christine O’Donnell was.
I didn’t read Slater’s article either other than the snippet that was posted. After the following snip I’m out of this thread as it’s not worthy of a lot of time, imo. The two gentlemen overseeing the Texas Reagan Campaign in 1980 had the following to say as published in an article by Matt K Lewis on 2-8-13:
Snip
So whos right? Its complicated.
I finally caught up with Rick Shelby, who helped me get to the bottom of it. Today, Shelbys with the American Gas Association, but in 1979, he was one of the original Regional Political Directors for the Reagan for President Committee. This involved coordinating nine states including Texas.
Since Texas was important, Shelby tells me he spent an inordinate amount of time in the Lone Star State in 1980. And though Rove never technically worked on the Reagan campaign, Shelby says he served as executive director for the states Victory Committee.
In that capacity, Shelby recalls that Rove played a vital role in helping raise the funds necessary for an effective voter ID and turnout program in the state. The confusion, he says, results from the fact that 1980 was the first year in which the law allowed for this sort of coordination.
Rove didnt work on the Reagan campaign, but he did work to help elect Reagan albeit after Reagan defeated George H.W. Bush and won the nomination (which, to some hardcore conservatives, is almost a moot point).
Ultimately, this, of course, isnt about Rove. Its really a microcosm of a struggle that has been taking place in the GOP for decades and continues to this day.
The Ford-Reagan split from 1976 is alive and well. And you cant really trust anyone who was on Team Ford.
UPDATE: An email from Ernest Angelo confirms Roves involvement, but refers to him as being in the campaign:
In 1980 I was Gov Reagans Texas chairman in the primary and Campaign Manager for the general election. Gov Clements endorsed Reagan after the Texas primary and was the campaign Chairman. I was a full time volunteer on site for most of the Fall campaign in Austin. I worked closely with Rick Shelby who was a Reagan Regional Political Director and was in Austin nearly full time. We had a large staff of volunteers and paid individuals. Im not much for titles but I can assure you Karl Rove was materially involved since he was working for me and Gov Clements in the campaign.

Adios......
yea those are the stories I read over the weekend - complicated...ha. success has many fathers
