Israeli troops detained an Associated Press photographer during West Bank unrest over the weekend, handcuffing him and forcing him to sit on the ground without food or water or access to a bathroom for roughly five hours, according to eyewitness accounts.

The photographer, Nasser Shiyoukhi, was released without charge after Saturday's incident.

Footage of the incident shows Shiyoukhi, 46, snapping pictures a short distance from Israeli security forces who were scuffling with a protester in the town of Yatta. Protesters had erected a small tent camp on what they say is Palestinian land occupied by Israelis. …

“forcing him to sit on the ground without food or water or access to a bathroom for roughly five hours”

I get this every time I have to go to the DMV or ANY state office....is this mistreatment or something that we are supposed to feel bad about?

AP’s Nasser Shiyoukhi’s bias shows on his Internet photo gallery from an Australian exhibit that “depicts the reality of life in Alkhalil (Hebron) and Gaza and the difficulties the Palestinian residents encounter under the present situation in that region.” The photos taken by Shiyoukhi and an Australian photographer show scenes of Palestinian heroics, and tragedy and images of Israeli occupation as seen through their lenses.

Is Shiyoukhi an AP journalist or a Palestinian advocate? The answer can be viewed in black and white and in living color at:

Compare his gallery to the gallery of photographs by Stefan Zaklin on the Washington Post’s Camera-Works site. His 14 photographs portray the dangers facing Hebron’s Jews from Palestinian snipers. View the Zaklin site at:

Generally speaking, there is no difference between the two.

Lesson learned by law enforcement and military at all levels: get the guy with the camera first.
