I have wondered if he had in mind pulling a DB Cooper - just disappearing somewhere forever, maybe even hiding somewhere, somehow, where his body can NEVER be found and then taking the big sleep.
And then if he disappears in a remote area as in dead, the LAPD would drive themselves crazy wondering if he committed certain murders from here on out.
