Of course it is a not so subtle attempt at making Christians the perpetual bad guys. The media and others have been pushing this propaganda purposely to enhance their agenda of demoralizing, discrediting and removing Gentiles from the political power base of the USA. The media does not pretend to represent Christian America.
I've never heard someone from the ME refer to an Iman as a "preacher'... I suspect you're right on this - and the motivation behind it.
