First Rockhurst is a Jesuit private school so they have EVERY right to make demands of their students. Secondly most parents I know who have kids there are in favor of it. I think it’s a great message!

60 strands of hair is quiet a bit much. And I do hope the records get destroyed when the students leave the school. Nothing is private anymore. Not in this day and age.

“... they have every right to make demands of their students”.

Granted... this is a private school and they make the rules. They can make the rule that everyone shaves one eyebrow and it would have to be enforced. That being said, just because it is a private school... doesn’t make this practice right. Schools in general are becoming the parents. Instead of having sensible rules about behavior and actually teaching the subjects (thus preparing the kids for either college, the work place and society in general)... we now have schools becoming the parents. For all the parents that you know who are in favor of it... how about this. Step up, become the Mom or Dad and do your job! A teen can’t drink alcohol if they aren’t at parties or swiping it from home. Every CVS, Walgreens or Walmart has drug tests for parents if they are concerned they are involved in drugs. Once again... we are a society that pushes our responsibilities onto other entities. Why bother with your kid, where he is, who he is with and doing.. if the school can now be the big, bad parent.

On another note, have the parents considered false positives? Eat a poppy seed bagel and you will test positive. Be given a tylenol #3 by your doctor and yes... you’ll test positive. What the parents fail to understand is that these records, factual or not.. will get out. The great message that you talk about is a message that the government, school, etc.. can force you to submit 60 hairs to “save the children”. Bad message and bad parenting, IMHO.

And it’s the rich kids that can afford the good drugs. Private school students are a lot like preachers’ kis.
