Paul Williams sang background on the Roger Nichols and Friends recordings at A&M. In 1968, he created Holy Mackerel at Warner Brothers to showcase his songs. This was the first time Paul's voice was heard on lead vocals. He also got Richard Perry to produce, and this was the beginning of Perry's career before he produced Barbra Streissand and got rich.

I was doing college radio in Philadelphia in 1968 when this single came out. This should have been a huge hit, and to this day I don't know why it failed to make the charts. I especially love the key change when he goes to the chorus.

Holy Mackerel: "Bitter Honey"

This was being played at KING in Seattle when I was in the process of successfully infiltrating the station in 1972. I still don't know why this wasn't a hit. It is one of the greatest pain songs ever written.

Paul Williams: "Waking Up Alone"

It's my favorite Paul Williams song and is absolutely heartbreaking.
