Just use regular .38 Special ammo, not the .38 Special +P. +P will be uncomfortable to shoot in that light of weight gun. Regular .38 Special has plenty of knockdown power.

I have the S&W Scandium in the exact same model but weighs 7 ounces less and costs $600 more. So light weight it's a blessing to carry but even the regular .38 Special makes it a hand smacker.

I think you'll be all right with yours at 18 ounces and regular .38 Special ammo but you need to practice so you're ready for the recoil. It will be a great gun to carry provided you get a concealed carry purse of some kind, and there all kinds now a days if you use the Google, and of course your carry permit. Nice present from your son!
