He was drafted[9] into the United States Armyin 1943 where he served as an infantryman with the 104th Infantry Division, landing in Cherbourg, France in September 1944. He earned two Battle Stars as a combat infantryman. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1946

Battle of Hurtgen Forest ... Battle of the Bulge
Battle of the Bulge speaks for itself; ever read about the Hurtgen Forest? A German officer said it was worse than fighting the Russians on the Eastern Front. Wow.
My FIL was at the Hurtgen Forest (5th Armored Div)... would never talk about it, not even to me. He'd get the 1000 yard stare just thinking about it.
Koch had flaws, but unlike today's libs, he loved America and he loved New York.
