What I like about melatonin is that you wake up without a drug hangover like you have with prescription sleep aids.
At least for me that's how it works and doesn't seem to be habit forming.
Once a semi-normal sleep cycle is restored, I just get off of it.
Usually good for a couple of months of normal circadian rhythm.

I suspect that I’ve not taken a large enough dose for long enough. It’s time to try again.

You’re right. It is much gentler on the system. It’s also said to be a powerful antioxidant.
