The Army has stopped serving cooked breakfasts to some of the U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan as part of its drawdown, a move that prompted troops to write home asking their families and friends to send care packages with cereal, breakfast bars and other foods.
The Army told the Washington Guardian the current cutbacks began Jan. 1, and affect about 2,700 soldiers deployed in forward operating bases in more remote areas of Afghanistan.
Officials said the reduction of cooked breakfasts and midnight meals is not related to the U.S. budget crisis, but rather is part of the effort to begin closing down U.S. operations in the affected areas and transition them to Afghan troops. The affected soldiers are being given packaged meals known as MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) as substitutes for a cooked breakfast, the officials said.

If you can’t win a war in ten years, time to come home. Let them all kill each other. They are anyway.
Most of my 6 years in the Marines was with c-rats. I still have a P38 on my dog tag chain. The last year I was in was when we were introduced to MREs. We called them “Meals Rejected by Ethioians” back then. They were new, and not particularly well received in my unit. We wanted our c-rats back. I suppose they’ve tweaked and improved the MREs in the past 30 years or so.
“IM SICK AND TIRED OF SEEING OUR YOUNG FOLKS BEING KILLED FOR NO REASON.
THOSE RAG HEADS HAVE BEEN KILLING THEMSELVES FOR 600 YEARS AND NOTHING WERE DOING OVER THERE WILL CHANGE THAT.
BRING THEM HOME AND SEND THE DICTATOR TO LEAVENWORTH WHERE HE BELONGS.”
I saw a story on the news tonight while I was at the gym about a soldier (possibly Marine) who had all four limbs blown off and had received an arm transplant. I literally just about choked up right in the middle of the gym. It’s pathetic what we are allowing to happen to our military people.
They had an episode about MRE’s on “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern”. That guy wouldn’t eat the stuff.
Succinct and elegant.
If we were fighting under leadership determined to win, no front line soldier would be bitching about the food.
But just think. If we go to war with the North Koreans the ROE’s may be the MRE’s.
“Please tell me why we arent firing these people so we can feed our deployed troops”
Because they are UNION, and it quite litterally takes an act of congress to fire them.
This is so Chicago. It's below freezing in Kabul and they cut back on hot breakfasts to the frontline troops. These arrogant skunks just don't care.
It's how the politicians act in Chicago - remorseless, pitiless, pukes. They target a vulnerable minority because it's part of their philosophical approach to life.
Hell, I thought she was auditioning for the role of “Slimer” in the next Ghostbusters movie.
Ah the FOBit’s.
....a bit off topic... but after reading all the posts by so many of you who have served in the military, I just want to say thanks to each of you for your service. May God bless all of you and your families.
I, too, think we should bring all of our troops home NOW. How many more must die or be maimed for people who don’t want us there or don’t appreciate the sacrifices of our men and women?
re the breakfasts, if Obama can send $155 million to help people of Syria, think our troops in Afghanistan should get the breakfast they want.
MREs because meals are not available is part of business. This sounds like someone is just shortchanging troops who COULD have 3 meals if someone just wanted to make it happen.
I thought breakfast was the best bet at a chow hall, because it is hard to screw it up.
my staff examined ways to reduce our footprint and set the conditions for the reduction of forces, explained Col. Joe Wawro, an infantry commander for the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat team. (1st Inf Div)
I don't believe in 2nd guessing the commander on the ground, and especially not on something as routine as how best to serve chow while drawing down his number of personnel.
Agreed.
The Czar found out what happens when you piss off the soldiers.
I would say this....if I were in a unit on some deployment order for a week, and had to use the MRE’s for breakfast...I wouldn’t say much of anything. It’s decent, and I’d probably start to use oatmeal mix more often. But....after a week of MREs...I’d be asking for fruit, and after two weeks...I’d really like to have a real breakfast occasionally. You’d think that a unit would deploy into a zone....do a week or two, and then pull back into some real camp where they’d get a couple of days of rest and cooked food.
“Nothing smells like a Mess Hall - Uh, Dining Facility - Um, sorry DFAC - at breakfast time.”
Lol, so true. I narrowed that smell down to a combination of the hot maple syrup bin, sausage and last week’s steaks. Just smelling it adds two lb.s.
I don’t know why they cut breakfast since it’s usually people’s favorite. Maybe it had the highest transportation and support requirement.
