I live 'way out in the boonies, and my house is set nearly a hundred yards from the road. We have already had filled cans of gasoline stolen, and there are reports that two tractors like mine have been stolen recently. I keep a 10-22 available, with an "adequate" filled magazine within reach. The plan is to disable/mark any trespassing vehicle by taking out tires, radiator, headlights and fuel tank -- and further "decorating" it as it attempts to leave.

The call to the Sheriff would be something like, "Reporting attempted theft of my tractor and other items from my shed. BOLO for a white pickup last seen heading west, with up to four flat tires, and with the sides and tailgate decorated with at least a dozen .22 caliber holes. Things here are secure, so I suggest you concentrate on apprehending the criminal trespassers in said vehicle first."

(BTW, has anyone ever tried to drive on four flat tires? It doesn't work. I found that out when punks in Phoenix slashed all four of the tires on my rental car. My first impression when it didn't move was, "Is the transmission blown?")

Not sure 22 will penetrate a tire.....I’ll have to test that theory myself.
