Gun background checks surged in last 6 weeks

Gun sales soared at the end of last year, and the trend has continued into 2013.

Since 1998, eight of the 10 highest days for gun background checks have taken place since the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, according to the FBI.

Background checks are the most reliable way to track the number of gun sales, and data from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System show that over the last 6 weeks, these checks have reached their highest levels in fifteen years.

I suspect that the numbers for the second half of the period examined are already being "flattened" by lack of stock on hand to purchase.

Headlines like that are good evidence that the number of gun owners in the country are way up.

In recent poll, 52% said they had a gun in the household. Given that 76% of the nation 313.9 Million are adults (238.6 Million Adults).

Crunching the numbers even more and adjusting for household circumstances and gun ownership underreporting.

(52% of 238.6 Million) I would estimate there are about 120 Million gun owners..
