EAST ST. LOUIS About 100 people were attending a musical event at a small church here when several masked gunmen burst into the church and demanded money and valuables, members and attendees said Monday.
The attendees, who did not give their names for fear of retaliation, said at least three robbers ordered people at the music event to the floor and took cash from them in the holdup about 5:30 p.m. Sunday at IRA Grove Free Will Baptist Church, 1701 Belmont Avenue.
The gunmen were wearing bandanas over their faces, according to police and witnesses. Witnesses did not get a good look at the robbers, and police said they didn't have a good description to provide.
The church was hosting a musical event that involved several other area churches.

Don’t try that in a First Baptist down south. Aside from me I know at least ten other members who carry on Sundays.
Gun-free zones = targets of opportunity.
I ALWAYS carry (unless I HAVE to fly).
One day my ex found out and angrily said ‘why would you want to take that to church?’
Perhaps I should find out how to send her this article.
And currently nobody (except for the Internet, LOL) knows I carry, better that way.
Don't try this in a West Virginia Catholic Church.
Seriously ...
This is the same community that had a welfare office melee just last week. LOL!
I’m especially wealthy on Sunday.....I’ve got the money for the offering plate and about 9 mil in my pocket.
Hell, even back in 1958 when I was stationed in Scott AFB it behooved one to have a loaded 1911 on the passenger’s seat when driving through E. St. Louis.
Family did route 66. From Chicago Art Museum to Santa Monica Pier. Guide books all say when you get near East S. Louis, get on the interstate and go around it.
Honest.
If this happens in the church I pastor, the perp(s) will have seconds to repent...
He will have chosen poorly.
“Witnesses did not get a good look at the robbers, and police said they didn’t have a good description to provide.”
Well, I wasn’t even there, but I’ve got a pretty good idea exactly what the robbers looked like...
I was born in Belleville when my dad was stationed at Scott AFB in 1953. Left when I was 6 months old though.
Not by myself, of course.....with my family. ;-)
Is that an unusual thing in E St Louis?
Brings to mind that scene in “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” The Griswold family got lost in what I assume was E. St. Louis. The homeboys stripped all their hubcaps stolen while Clark was asking for directions. I got lost in ESL last winter and was frantically asking my son for directions to get out of there. I think he was as panicked as I was.

I couldn’t answer that but the story said the Church in question was ‘hosting’ a multi church musical event SO the perps were just the ‘welcome wagon’ to the neighborhood.
Of course I am sure everyone will show up next week to finish the event......
LOL, don’t try it in any WV church. If you don’t get shot, you might get snake bit.
