Sounds to me like he is just living the Biblical instruction to “Love Thy Enemy” to his full ability.
In a similar way Rev. Jerry Falwell befriended Larry Flynt after their SCOTUS battle over that dreadful parody ad.
I don’t have any issues with someone being friendly with gays. One of my childhood friends is gay and we talk pretty regularly. We just don’t talk about the fact that he’s gay.
