"Yep, they won’t gain enough of the hispanic vote to even count, while they’ll lose yet more of the conservative vote. Makes me wonder what their long-term plan is, because they couldn’t be this stupid."

There is no long-term plan. The elite Repubs simply live in a bubble-world, and listen to the likes of their consultants, WSJ editors, the Colin Powells and King Jeb- all of whom openly despise the base. They could care less what happens to average Americans- all that matters to them is backroom wheeling and dealing.

You’re correct, I was thinking like a citizen, not like a politician on the make. As long as they and their children can be the “elite” in their lifetimes, then “apres moi le deluge”. They’re at the opposite end of the pole from Founders, who thought in terms of posterity.

I don’t think this bunch even really cares if they ever retake the White House or a congressional majority, they’ll have their power and perks just the same, without the stress. It doesn’t stress someone like Hussein, the man who can sleep theough a fatal attack on an American embassy and murder of an ambassador and two CIA former SEALs who tried to prevent the murder. I’ll give the Republicans this much-if they had the job of president, they would probably feel obliged to fulfill it-unlike Hussein-so who needs the bother, when they can just retain their nice comfortable congressional seats and all the good things that go with that.

They don’t even make much pretense now of taking the wishes of the citizens into account anymore-after the last two elections, maybe they believe that it doesn’t matter anyway, if they can’t beat ‘em (the left), they may as well join them. Or if not actually join them, then not go through the bother of fighting them very hard.

Between the cynicism of the voters who give a damn (I don’t mean the takers, the “gimmee” voters) and the politicians, there’s no “fight” left anywhere.

Some of us are trying to fly under the radar to have the kind of freedom in life this government is determined to deny us-freedom of association, freedom from stranglehold regulations, etc. Hopefully we can manage at least that much.
