Obama Admin. Creates Right for Disabled Students to Play Sports

School districts that do not provide deaf students "a visual cue" alongside a starter pistol to enable them to compete on the track team or create basketball and tennis leagues for students in wheelchairs will be in violation of federal law and could lose government funding.

On Friday, the Obama administration declared disabled students "have the right" to "an equal opportunity to participate in their schools' extracurricular activities." In essence, the Obama administration established the right for disabled students to play wheelchair basketball or wheelchair tennis.

The U.S. Department of Education sent a guidance letter to schools, school districts, and universities informing them of the new mandate, which noted that a "2010 report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that many students with disabilities are not afforded an equal opportunity to participate in athletics, and therefore may not have equitable access to the health and social benefits of athletic participation."

Seth Galanter, the Department’s Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, said the Department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) will enforce Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. He specifically noted that the Act was a federal law “designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities (including traditional public schools and charter schools) that receive Federal financial assistance.”

If school districts and universities do not provide accommodations the OCR deems sufficient, they could lose federal funding. The mandate is being compared to Title IX, which deemed that no person should be excluded on the basis of sex from participation in, "denied the benefits of," or "subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

, but once you get into high school the groups are all competitive
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You expect government schooling to be rational?

Government schooling is the very definition of a socialist-funded, compulsory-use, single payer, and godless entitlement.

Question: When has a socialist, single-payer, godless, compulsory-use, compulsory-funded entitlement ever been rational?

As for compassion:

When has a socialist, compulsory, godless, and single payer entitlement ever been compassionate?

That is the correct answer. Eventually alternative non state funded schooling with become more and more popular as the feds make public school nothing more than large expensive child care centers.

We need a class action lawsuit to relieve taxpayers of paying school taxes if they decide to not send their children to government schools.

There are many kids who are lonely ...
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Uh oh! Lonely!

Some socialist-entitlement school comrade is sure to define lonely as a disability.

Here's a possible legal strategy:

All government owned and run schools violate the First Amendment and freedom of conscience: Why?

1) Government schools are not religiously neutral. They never have been, are not now, and never can be. Why? Because religious neutrality is an impossible state of mind. All sentient humans ( and **all** schools) must choose between either a godless or God-centered worldview. Neither of these worldview is neutral in content or consequences. No child should be FORCED by means of police and court threat to attend these religiously NON-neutral government schools. No taxpayer should be FORCED by threat of police and court action to fund these schools.

2) All schools must control speech, press, assembly, and expression of religion to maintain order and safety. ( Prisons do, too.) When government runs and owns compulsory-use socialist schools, the government violates the speech, press, assembly, and religious expression of the child. In many ways the government treats children ( whose only crime was to be born) as a prisoner. No child should be FORCED by threat of police and court action to be treated this way by the government. No citizen should be under the threat of police and court action to fund it.

Fundamentally.....Government owned and run socialist-entitlement, single-payer, godless, and compulsory schooling is a a freedom of conscience and First Amendment ABOMINATION!

Can you be against it, you heartless Republicans? Could you be against Bush pere’s ADA, which ended up driving many small businesses out of... business (but you’ll never hear about it, so it didn’t happen)? It works every time, fake compassion does, government compassion, and it works on Conservatives as well.

I think this will come to a halt when Harvard, Yale and Princeton can no longer give kids of alumni or wealthy influential families an edge in admissions.

Make them take all the qualified applicants into a pool - by only objective measures SAT and GPA - have them draw the ones that are admitted lottery style.

This everyone wins/get to participate nonsense will end within 10 seconds.

I was born too soon.

Because of my 1” vertical leaping ability, I was denied the opportunity to ‘participate’ on my high school’s basketball team.

I need to sue somebody...

What would happen if schools eliminated **all** sports and arts activities and turned the whole mess over to the county departments of recreation?

What would happen if the county departments of recreation refused to run these sports and arts programs?

No, but you would think a private Christian one would be. Also, you would hope churches would have groups.

I wish I had time to start something, but with 2 kids dealing with issues and my husband having cancer, I’m swamped.

When kids are young, there are all sorts of groups. My daughters were in all sorts of activities. Then high school comes along, and there is nothing. By the time I realized there was a problem, she’s already a sophomore.

Wow! Your plate is certainly full! That's a lot to deal with.

Maybe, the homeschooling groups would let your girls participate in their activities? (Just a suggestion. ) Given your family's health situation they might even have members willing to pick-up and drop-off your girls.

Look at the economics of the education-industrial complex for a reason why the churches don’t step up to the challenge.

Why?

Answer: Government schooling, in many of our counties ( maybe even most), are the single largest employer with the most employees and largest payroll that far exceeds any private business in the county! Then add to this all the vendors and contractors and their employees that service the education-industrial complex.

So?....With so many school employees, government school vendors and their employees sitting in the pews how many ministers are willing to bite the hand that puts money in the collection plate? And...How many ministers even have spouses that work for the socialist-entitlement government schools?

Don’t look for help from the churches.

I guess I did not make my point clear enough. Let me design the “wheelchair” and I will show you 8 year old kids making touchdowns in the NFL.

I was not putting you or anybody else down.

This is not their money, it's our money. They tax you then they make you do whatever they want in order to get your own money back.

You're right! I feel into that trap, well, I guess it happens to the best of us from time to time, it isn't their money but ours. Still as a first step, we should tell the Feds to bug off and when we hit second gear, don't give them anymore money.

I am thinking a running back with a properly designed wheelchair on a regular team could be quite effective. (^;

No, think outside the box, man! B-) Exoskeletons! BTW, I think General Electric designed one in the late 1960's IIRC. It was posted here not too long ago at: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2978520/posts

I think Vonnegut was more of the old school “ban the bomb” type liberal. Yes, he was liberal but not the uber moonbats we have now. BTW, in Harrison Bergeron, he also predicted feminist women with three names, “Diana Moon-Glampers” who was the “Handicapper General.”
