You might be out of date. There have been several reports that the BATF is now carrying those small, hand-held scanners when the are “inspecting the 4473 forms” and run it over all the pages. I am sure they are not planning to do anything illegal, though (/sarc).

But it doesn’t seem to be a widespread policy that invaids every retailer on some regular interval.
