Outrage as 18-year-old high school basketball star taking D.C. by storm is ... almost 21

A towering high school basketball star dominating the court in the nation's capital has much more than a height advantage, a startling new report has revealed.

Junior Etou, who is originally from the Congo, is the talk of the town in Washington, DC, where he plays power forward for the Bishop O'Connell High School Knights.

But the 6'7" high school senior, who has drawn interest from several colleges with storied basketball programs, is almost legally allowed to drink.

An investigation by Deadspin.com found several different birthdays listed for Etou, both in 1992, which means he is just months away from his 21st birthday.

The site reported that Etou, whose full name is Luc Tselan Tsiene Etou, has appeared on rosters for three Congo-based teams, which list his birthday as being either June 4, 1992 or April 6, 1992.

It WAS interesting that De Matha was/is? a sports power house. Could never figure out why year after year they dominated especially if they had the same requirements for attending a Catholic high as the rest did. Got any ideas why this is so?
Guilty as charged...the win against De Matha in 2003 in b-ball was Deeeeeelicious!

You are a blessed man. That’s a little before my time, but I’ve seen the game ball, met some of the players, and of course, was taught World History by Morgan Wooten, himself.

So how does Morgan Wooten feel about how his son is running the basketball program at Oconnell? It’s well known that Oconnell/coach Joe are shading the rules if not outright breaking them, and that the basketball team at Oconnell [much like G’town U] is not representative of the rest of the student body. My husband said that wasn’t Wooten Sr’s MO at all. Several of my son’s friends went to OConnell, had played CYO and Falls Church Rec league basketball, and are 6’5” + but had no prayer of playing at Oconnell under Wooten, who operates by recruiting abroad. I distinctly remember the makeup of their teams changing under Wooten.

Dear matginzac,

It is customary to announce the charges to the accused before declaring guilt, LOL.

Even the Communists did as much.

Dear xsmommy,

They are probably more comparable socioeconomically and demographically today than they were in the past. Nonetheless, even today, differences persist to a lesser degree.

“i am not from the DC area,...”

I've only lived here since 1966, so I'm a bit of a newcomer, still.

However, I understand your lack of knowledge of the various Catholic high school rivalries in the region, as well as the stereotypes partisans of each school apply to the other. There is another poster on this thread who has made some sort of charge about DeMatha. That is a stereotypical sort of reaction that DeMatha evokes from many in the region (and outside the region, too).

The 2006 - 2010 period was far from DeMatha’s best. And for Gonzaga, it was a historically-good period. As an example, during that period, Gonzaga won three Alhambra Tournament titles, out of the five total that it has won over the decades. Conversely, DeMatha won only one Alhambra title during that period, out of its 22 total.

Dear xsmommy,

I haven't had a chance to talk with Coach Wooten in a while, so I don't know. I wouldn't bring it up anyway. He's in his mid-80s and in less-than-optimal health.

Young Coach Wooten (the one at O'Connell) is not at DeMatha. He was an assistant coach at DeMatha many years ago, but made the move to O'Connell in Coach Wooten's (the older) latter years as coach.

Beyond that, I won't say anything about Coach Wooten (the younger) in the context of his relationship to DeMatha.
