Part of the hazing ritual at West Point dealt with enforcing table manners. We learned not to hunch over the table - rather stay at least one fist width away from it.

Of course, that was after they taught you not to eat with your hands, to chew with your mouth closed, to drool into the spittoons by the side of your chairs, and not directly on the table, etc.
