I don’t think Benghazi was necessarily set up in advance (although there was probably some suspicion or fear, at least locally on the part of the staff, that something might happen), but I think when it happened, the decision was made to tolerate it and just consider the deaths of the ambassador and his aide to be “bumps in the road.”
But you’re right. Obama went to bed and probably gave orders that he shouldn’t be disturbed once he knew that the place was destroyed and the ambassador was probably dead, not expecting two honest Americans to come in to attempt to protect both American lives and American property. They messed up his scenario, whatever it was, and that’s why Hillary had to hit her head, other people had to disappear, etc.
The blind sheik was no doubt one of the objectives of the attackers, however, because the Egyptians who rioted earlier that day had also been demanding his release.
According to a couple of AQ members who were captured fleeing from the French, there were at least 2 Egyptians in the multi-national AQ group that attacked the gas refinery. I think there was only one actual Algerian.
AQIM (AQ in the Islamic Mahgreb), the group that attacked the refinery, has been active throughout that area and was certainly involved in the Benghazi incident. They are multinational and some of their members are Egyptians.
I would not be in the least surprised if Obama releases the blind sheik to them as a “gesture of goodwill.”
If Obama releases the sheik we will absolutely know that someone in the ME has the goods on Obama and Benghazi.
Good point. I’d never thought of it that way before, but it could be a blackmail situation.
My only question is whether Americans would even care.
