What caused me to disbelieve the story completely is he said the bullets were the kind that would basically not go through the body but they expanded and stay there. This brought up a major red flag. You're spot on accurate - a .223 round would easily pass through, especially at close range, regardless of the type.

I think it would be pretty easy to look at all the empty bullet casings on the floor of the school and determine whether they were pistol or rifle rounds.
