House accepts $33.7B Sandy bill amendment
The Hill ^ | 01/15/13 07:11 PM ET | Pete Kasperowicz

The House on Tuesday evening approved an amendment to a huge Hurricane Sandy relief bill that adds $33.7 billion to the bill, nearly tripling the size of the main bill.

Members approved the amendment from Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) in a 228-192 vote. It was opposed by 190 Republicans, but 38 Republicans joined 190 Democrats in support and allowed it to pass.

That vote put the House on a path to passing a $50.7 billion disaster aid bill early Tuesday evening. Along the way, the House also rejected several other amendments that would have shaved millions of dollars off the cost of the bill.

The House also voted on amendments from:

Rep. Bill Flores (R-Texas), striking $150 million for Regional Ocean Partnership grants. Passed, 221-197.

Rep. Jon Runyan (R-N.J.), clarifying that disaster money in the Frelinghuysen amendment is for states that were hit by Hurricane Sandy and suffered a fisheries disaster in 2012. Passed by voice vote.

Nothing ever changes.

As the addict says, a million ain’t enough, and one is too many.

Why should we vote for the current Republican party? They are not even trying.

First of all, it wasn’t a hurricane. Second, what did Alaska fisheries have to do with the storm?

This is simply another pork-laden opportunity to steal money that our children will have to pay interest on, because we are broke and all this is borrowed money.

Because they are nice guys who go along to get along? Because they don't want to be called nasty names like "stingy jerks?"

Those seem rather insufficient reasons.

We need a new conservative party. Until we put it together and bring it to power we are screwed and so is the nation.

Sandy was only one part of a three part weather event.

Three major weather systems collided: a southern late season hurricane that was very big … a high altitude Canadian jet stream that barreled in from the north … and a winter snow storm that approached from the west. A relatively strong nor’easter would have resulted if Sandy had not merged with these other systems.

When Sandy combined with the other storms it became a super storm.

Sandy’s immense size also comes into play. The peak diameter of storm force winds with Irene was 460 miles, for Katrina it was 435 miles. These are very large distances but only half as big as Sandy at 943 miles. This almost thousand mile wide storm had the second most kinetic energy of any storm measured and it struck a densely populated area.

It also has to be noted that the super storm hit at high tide, during a full moon. Results would have been much different if Sandy had hit a barren coastline in North Carolina or Texas.

“..... but 38 Republicans joined 190 Democrats in support and allowed it to pass.”

I have not seen their names, but as far as I am concerned, those 38 Republicans are traitors.

At this point in our history, we need those morons to be ‘zero tolerance’ when it comes to pork.
