Correct again, in the case of a processed 4473 that did not result in a completed sale the FFL is required to keep the form on file for 5 years. The information on what exact firearm was attempted to purchase may or may not be filled out in section "D" in that case.
All the form would show was John Doe attempted to purchase a handgun, a long gun, or both.
In the case of a CC being denied that final section may be filled out detailing the exact purchase but I personally have never run into that.
