New York City spends over $1 billion a year carting students back and forth to school, and yet, the service is horrible, with many kids spending over an hour to get to a school less than three miles away. Why? Sweetheart deals with unionized transportation providers. What else is new.

With 180 days of school, full subway/bus fare comes to $810. With six full-fare 30-day passes, it’s $624.

At $6,900 per student for bussing, that’s 3,066 subway/bus full fares per year.
